We chatted with Tamara Mayne of Brooklyn Candle Co. right here in our very own backyard of Brooklyn!

What is your background? I studied art, economics, and graphic design in college (University of Virginia and Fashion Institute of Technology). I’ve worked at a variety of jobs in tech, finance, and fashion, but when I started Brooklyn Candle Studio, I was working as an art director in the fashion industry—doing a lot of web design, conceptualizing photo shoots, doing all the creative for social media, and a variety of other creative things.

What type of gifts does your company make? We make handcrafted soy candles with a minimalist aesthetic.

What is your favorite part about your job? I love many aspects of the job, but coming up with new products, scents, packaging, and conceptualizing the photoshoots is my favorite.

What is the best gift you ever gave? This is cheesy, but whichever gift touched the recipient’s heart the most. It was probably something I gave either my husband or my mom!

What is the best gift you ever received? A photo diary of my now-husband’s and my relationship—he spent weeks making it and gave it to me when he proposed (on the last page he asked me to marry him). I still cry when I look at it!

What is your favorite charitable cause? We as a company donate monthly to the ACLU.
